A quick, cynical slice of early Trump-era political dread.
Rate this special
Rather than a traditional hour-long special, Johnny Taylor offered a brief, reactive burst of political exhaustion. Captured during the early, chaotic days of the Trump administration, the track finds the Sacramento comedian channeling the collective dread of a country trying to make sense of its new political reality. He treats the immediate post-election shock not as a grand historical moment, but as a bizarre, daily stress test.
Released in February 2017 by Stand Up! Records, the digital benefit single sold for a dollar, with all proceeds directly aiding Planned Parenthood. The release arrived on the heels of Taylor being named Sacramento’s best comedian of 2016 by the Sacramento News & Review, finding him at a transitional point in his career between his 2014 debut album, Tangled Up in Plaid, and his 2018 follow-up, Bummin’ with the Devil (which ultimately integrated this track into its final running order).
The recording stands as a time capsule of 2017 political anxiety, swapping high-minded theory for the weary disbelief of an average observer. Backed by cover art by designer Jason Malmberg that visually parodies the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the release turned a short, stage-tested rant into an immediate, charitable fundraiser.
