VH1 Stand-Up Spotlight: November 1991 episode

Lee Allan, Poppy Champlin, Jeff Joseph and 4 more

VH1 · 1991

A rapid-fire nineties cable television showcase featuring seven working comics.

Before the 1990s comedy boom cooled off, cable showcases like VH1’s Stand-Up Spotlight operated as a proving ground for working club professionals. Hosted by Rosie O’Donnell, the series stacked episodes with short, polished sets from comics looking to translate their road acts to television. This November 1991 broadcast packs seven names into a single block, featuring Lee Allan, Poppy Champlin, Jeff Joseph, Jann Karam, Sheila Kay, Paul Kozak, and Suzy Soro. The format leaves no room for drawn-out premises or crowd work, requiring each performer to get on stage, deliver their material, and exit.

Backstory

Part of VH1's late-1980s and early-1990s expansion into non-music programming, showcasing stand-up comedy sets in a minimalist spotlight format.
