If there is a single bit responsible for turning Matt Rife into an arena-filling act, it is his crowd work. In his second self-released YouTube special of 2023, he leans entirely into this strength by ditching prepared material completely. The show is built around a single premise: asking audience members about their dating dealbreakers and immediately turning their answers into fast, highly responsive roasts.
Filmed at the Miami Improv, the set features Rife batting back and forth with a crowd that is eager to participate. In one of the show’s better segments, a woman complains about dating a handsome Ivy League graduate who kept a massive Lego village in his room. Rife spends several minutes digging into the logistics of the plastic bricks before steering the joke to the real dealbreaker: the guy still lived with his parents.
Rife released the special in June 2023, partly to satisfy his massive online following and partly to retire the “red flags” prompt so fans would stop shouting it during his scripted tour sets. It was a savvy career move. Dropped right as his massive global tour went on sale, the release kept his internet momentum high during the months leading up to his polarizing Netflix debut later that year.
