World Tour of New Zealand

Billy Connolly is at his best when he’s just wandering through a story, and World Tour of New Zealand plays directly to that strength by literally letting him wander. Instead of a standard, static theater set, the show packages his stand-up around a travelogue, cutting between Connolly riding a custom three-wheeled trike across both islands and performing to local crowds. It is a format that allows his observational style to feel completely spontaneous, whether he’s riffing on the absurdity of a medical procedure or adapting his material on the fly for tiny audiences.

The stand-up clips featured are taken from his 2004 Too Old to Die Young tour. The material leans heavily into the indignities of middle age, most memorably with a graphic, extended routine about the agonizing preparation required for a colonoscopy. He also gets plenty of mileage out of his marriage to sex psychologist Pamela Stephenson, dryly noting how terrifying it is to live with an expert on the subject.

Rather than sticking to large metropolitan arenas, Connolly takes his stage show to spots like Stewart Island, playing to a room of just 255 people, before hitting larger theaters in Dunedin, Christchurch, and Auckland. The travelogue portions of the eight-part BBC series show him participating in Maori traditions, bungy jumping, and getting caught in a misunderstanding with a local biker gang. The result is a portrait of a veteran performer who no longer needs a structured hour to keep an audience engaged.
