An Hour & Some Of Tony Law

Tony Law

Comedy Dynamics · 2018 · 65 min

Early absurdity featuring smooth Belgians, time travel, and a flatmate bear.

Tony Law walks out on stage pumping up the room with hollow hype chants before steadily picking apart the cadence of standard club stand-up. Instead of conventional setup-and-punchline mechanics, the performance runs on absurd domestic fiction: a black bear roommate who uses skateboards for hands, the suspicious smoothness of Belgian people, and the mechanics of a time machine operated by a dachshund.

Filmed for independent label Go Faster Stripe and originally released on DVD in 2008 before receiving wider digital distribution in 2018, the recording caught Law before the tweed waistcoats and Edinburgh award nominations arrived. Clean-shaven and dressed down in an athletic pullover, he looks like an ordinary club regular, which makes the bizarre internal logic of his material even more disorienting.

Law spends much of the hour interrogating his own performance in real time. When an idea stalls, he pauses to voice the confusion of the audience out loud, pulling the room back on side by pointing out how ridiculous the situation is. He mocks mainstream stage tropes, ridiculing lazy observations and clumsy stage accents before wandering into a prolonged, deliberately awful Yorkshire impression.

The physical release carried a warning from Law that this was not a “thinky thinky” show, alongside a directing credit officially handed to Cartridge Davison, his time-traveling dog.
