Go! Mr Tony Go!

Tony Law

Comedy Dynamics · 2018 · 61 min

Shambolic meta-comedy from a Canadian comic dismantling his own routine.

Tony Law spends the hour insisting he is a genuinely dangerous man, then backs up the threat with petty, low-stakes rebellion like tearing the “do not remove” tag off a newly delivered mattress. Whenever the absurdity threatens to derail, he steps entirely outside the routine to examine the wreckage, providing running commentary from an imaginary voice in the crowd or admitting that a flat gag about eating a python was pre-prepared and cannot be taken back.

The set originated at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where Law performed it in a noon slot at The Stand and walked away with the inaugural Amused Moose Laughter Award. After fifteen years as an eccentric fixture on the circuit, the show served as his breakthrough. Director Craig Griffith and indie comedy label Go Faster Stripe recorded the performance at London’s Soho Theatre, leading to a broader streaming release in 2018.

Dressed like an Edwardian explorer in braces and knee-high socks, Law barrels through non-sequiturs about panda prostitutes, time travel, and the uselessness of observational comics who just notice things. He compares the entire exercise to free-form jazz: enjoyable for about forty-five minutes before the audience inevitably wants him to stick to a melody.
