Tim Slagle spent his early stand-up years as a political contrarian and former punk rocker, but this set finds him settling comfortably into the role of a cranky old man. The shift is practical; as he points out, he doesn’t need to write new material when he can just swap “legalize it” for “get off my lawn” in his grass bits. Recorded on a winter night at the Acme Comedy Club in Minneapolis, this hour-long set targets the absurdities of aging, modern education, and, of course, the disruptive groups of pre-wedding revelers who frequent comedy venues.
Slagle spent over thirty years on the road before putting together this 2023 release. His style remains dry, focusing on linguistic and logistical puzzles. He tries to quantify exactly how much is in a “buttload,” wonders why the human brain cannot clear its cache of junk data like the Brady Bunch theme song, and proposes warning labels in college course catalogs for majors that have no career prospects. Rather than attempting a sweeping cultural statement, he is content to keep his focus narrow and unapologetically grumpy.
