The Half Hour
Comedy Central · 2015 · 30 min
Barry Rothbart works through cheap motels, weed, and terrible road gigs.
Barry Rothbart operates with the weary composure of a man who routinely books the wrong room and makes peace with the mystery stain on the rug. His best run here is an indignity drawn from the road: performing an unenthusiastic college showcase where he was forced to take the stage immediately following an appearance by an owl. You cannot follow an exotic animal with stand-up, and watching him recount his slow surrender to that reality is the highlight of the set.
Taped at The Royale in Boston in June 2015 for Comedy Central’s fourth season of The Half Hour, the set caught Rothbart as he was balancing club dates with screen work, having recently landed a small role in The Wolf of Wall Street.
Rather than Hollywood stories, the material sticks to small embarrassments: the bleak amenities of two-star motels, botched orders at a Burger King drive-through, and the subtle signs that a day is unsalvageable.
