Live at the Odeon Hammersmith London

Billy Connolly

Virgin Records · 1991 · 60 min

Profane storytelling and physical comedy from a marathon London theater run.

Connolly treats a packed theater crowd like neighbors who walked in uninvited, wandering between tabloid Doomsday scares and the miseries of bad underwear. The routine moves on association rather than clean punchlines. He begins describing an ill-fated vacation to Ibiza, derails into the horror of childhood swimming trips to the freezing North Sea, and acts out the bodily shock until the original premise barely matters.

Recorded during a multi-night run at London’s Hammersmith Odeon in June 1991, the performance caught Connolly in an odd stretch of his career. In the United States, he was spending the year appearing in scripted network television, having just wrapped season five of the sitcom Head of the Class. Back on a London stage, there was none of that family-friendly containment.

He opens by acknowledging that Carol Thatcher recently walked out of one of his gigs, noting it was a shame her brother Mark was not around to drive her home. He shifts into arguments over pit bull bans, canine mating habits, and the physical reality of cheap trousers.

The physical pantomime carries as much weight as the dialogue, especially when he reenacts the clammy dread of wet tweed.
