Doug Stanhope: Comedians' Comedian's Comedians
Comedy Dynamics · 2017 · 59 min
Stand-up crowd banter dragged through filthy, repetitive absurdity.
Brendon Walsh takes the most tired trope in live comedy, asking the crowd to give it up for themselves, and stretches it into a grotesque tribute to human reproduction. He demands cheers for parents, the mechanics of paternal arousal, and the unphotographed genitals of grandparents who lived long before smartphones existed. It is repetitive and strange, using standard club cadence to deliver something filthy.
Recorded in March 2017 at Esther’s Follies during the SXSW Comedy Festival in Austin, Texas, the showcase was organized by Doug Stanhope for the streaming network Seeso. Walsh was returning to familiar territory. He cut his teeth in Austin’s local comedy scene over a decade earlier, winning the Funniest Person in Austin contest in 2004 before moving to Los Angeles and co-hosting the prank-heavy podcast The Bone Zone.
Stanhope, who hosted the taping in a loud patterned suit and spent time complaining about festival badge-holders, acted strictly as a curator. Walsh shared the bill with Glenn Wool and Morgan Murphy. Rather than running through an ordinary festival showcase set, Walsh leaned into deliberate pauses and crude anti-comedy, daring the room to stay uncomfortable.
