Comedy Central Presents: Charlie Viracola

Charlie Viracola wants off this planet, and he has a blueprint for a replacement. The central hook of his half-hour set is a detailed proposal for “Planet Charlie,” a new celestial body governed by a highly specific, slightly chaotic set of laws. In Viracola’s utopian vision, public self-pleasure at the post office is legal, toes are no longer classified as pre-existing medical conditions, and George W. Bush is barred entry.

Filmed at the Hudson Theatre in New York City and aired in May 2003, the set caught Viracola during a prolific period on the club circuit. Having already made rounds on Premium Blend and the 1990s series Full Frontal Comedy, this showcase served as his most prominent national calling card before he transitioned into writing for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He relies on a weary, deadpan skepticism of modern life, using the absurd demands of his imaginary planet to highlight real-world frustrations.
