Comedy Central Presents: Jeff Dunham

Jeff Dunham spends his half-hour showcase acting as the straight man to a suitcase full of cartoonish, hyper-specific puppets that say the things he cannot. The highlight is the early incarnation of Melvin the Superhero Guy, a caped wannabe who admits his flying distance is limited by how far Dunham can throw him, sporting a set of small, beady black eyes that would later be redesigned.

Filmed at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, this 2003 episode of the network’s stand-up showcase came at a pivotal transition point for Dunham. Although he had spent more than two decades on the club circuit and had been a hit on late-night TV, this was his first solo televised special. It served as a proof of concept for the massive, arena-packing tours that would follow a few years later.

Along with Melvin, the set introduces viewers to Walter, the cynical retiree who barks about the miseries of his long marriage, and Peanut, the hyperactive purple woozle. Peanut’s frantic energy is balanced by José Jalapeño, a talking pepper on a stick who serves as the perfect low-key foil. His technical skill as a ventriloquist remains the backbone of the act, keeping multiple distinct voices moving without ever losing the rhythm of the room.
