Comedy Central Presents: Ron White

Ron White walks on stage carrying a glass of scotch and a cigar, immediately signaling a sharp departure from the family-friendly redneck shtick of his Blue Collar Comedy Tour mates. He plays the cynical, self-assured high-roller who is just as comfortable mocking his own wealthy in-laws as he is explaining why he is a cowboy who refuses to hunt. It is the signature persona that would soon make him a solo theater headliner: slow-paced, deeply unapologetic, and thoroughly oiled by mid-shelf liquor.

Filmed at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, the 2003 broadcast caught White at the precise moment his career was transitioning into the mainstream. While the Blue Collar concert film was conquering basic cable that same spring, this brief set proved White could easily hold a stage by himself without relying on the rural branding of his tour-mates. The set features early, tight versions of what would become his most famous routines, including his rants about vegetarians and the seminal story of getting arrested and thrown out of a New York bar—which introduced his “Tater Salad” alias to a national audience.
