Tracy Smith

Comedy Central · 2003 · 25 min

Polished relationship stand-up from a veteran club comic.

The best moments in Tracy Smith’s 2003 half-hour special come when she targets the self-sabotaging realities of dating in her thirties. Rummaging through an imaginary pile of discarded tissues, she mimics a woman desperately hunting for the past flings she discarded in her twenties: ‘Where’s the one who liked me too much? Where’s the one who was too nice?’ It’s a self-deprecating routine that balances cynical honesty with the crowd-pleasing energy of a seasoned club veteran.

Filmed at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, the special caught the Northern Ontario native at a turning point in her career. Having spent a decade building a reputation on late-night showcases like NBC’s Late Fridays, Premium Blend, and stand-up slots on HBO and Lifetime, Smith used this 2003 slot to showcase her highly polished, relationship-focused material. Her set leans heavily on the trials of aging-singlehood, finding a soulmate, and the absurdities of dieting and hair removal. She performs against a bizarre, Bedouin-boudoir-themed stage set, complete with a hookah, courtesy of Comedy Central’s custom scenic designs of the era.

While some of her observational detours, like a bit about overspending at Target, feel standard for early-2000s club comedy, she commands the stage with an easy confidence. The Los Angeles Times praised the set upon its release, highlighting her tight pacing and the confidence of her delivery.
