The Half Hour
Comedy Central · 2016 · 30 min
Deadpan observations on stubborn singlehood and an uncooperative brain.
A restless mind is familiar territory for stand-ups, but Emily Heller treats hers with memorable precision, comparing her brain to a rogue radio DJ that refuses to take requests, queuing up the first verse of ‘Mambo No. 5’ before sliding directly into an imaginary argument with a loved one. The premise sets up a set built on deadpan self-scrutiny and hyper-specific indignities.
Taped at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans in June 2016 as part of season five of the Comedy Central series, the set aired that September. Running twenty-two minutes, it captured Heller as her profile as both a performer and a television writer was accelerating. She had released her debut comedy album, Good For Her, the year before, co-hosted the podcast Baby Geniuses, and was writing for comedies like People of Earth.
Much of the set focuses on the quiet friction between single life and domestic expectations. Rather than pitching singlehood as tragic or fiercely empowering, she treats it with stubborn contentment, citing Frasier Crane as a reasonable role model and picking apart married friends who hand out unsolicited romantic wisdom. Other bits dig into her upbringing in Northern California, where permissive parents allowed her to cultivate questionable teenage fashion choices, and an impression of her mother whose personality changed overnight after adopting a small dog.
