A Whole Different Story...
Universal · 2015 · 60 min
Arena stand-up built on Glasgow skepticism and middle-class food diaries.
Most comics who play basketball arenas inflate their acts to match the scale, widening their smiles and softening the material so the back row stays comfortable. Bridges leans the other way. He talks about lying on a food diary—admitting to his dietician that the truth would break his heart—with the blunt, conspiratorial irritation of someone cornering an acquaintance in a smoking area.
The show draws heavily on the friction of his upward mobility. Having grown up in working-class Clydebank, he finds himself living in Glasgow’s affluent West End, utterly baffled by neighbors who deseed pomegranates with fruit knives and dog owners who name their pets after Mexican muralists. When he touches on childhood, it is through the quiet horror of a sleepover, remembering the shock of realizing another family’s domestic rituals were completely alien. Later, he breaks down the misery of a 6 a.m. house party, zeroing in on a grown man trying to spark a stray joint off a toaster.
Filmed during an October 2015 run at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, the performance caught Bridges at twenty-eight in the middle of a sixteen-night hometown residency. It was his third arena special, arriving after the publication of his autobiography and a relentless schedule across the UK and Ireland. Contemporary reviews noted that the material leaned more heavily into domestic routines than the overt politics of his previous tour, though critics like Brian Logan in The Guardian pointed out that his pugnacious Glaswegian delivery kept the observational format from turning soft.
