Joe Pasquale arrived on VHS with a warning on the back cover: “Includes material never worn by a comedian before”. It is a fitting disclaimer for a comic whose act relies heavily on prop comedy, visual gags, and a delivery frequently likened to a demented helium balloon. Live and Squeaky captures Pasquale in his commercial ascent, bringing his chaotic energy to a theater audience.
Released by Video Collection International in October 1996, the tape cemented the comedian as a reliable mainstream act. He had been steadily building his profile since a runner-up finish on New Faces in 1987, but this release served as a definitive breakthrough. The recording sold enough copies to gross over £1 million and earn a Platinum Retail Performance award, confirming there was a large market for a performer willing to look entirely ridiculous on stage.
