The Half Hour
Comedy Central · 2016 · 30 min
High-strung stand-up about pet adoption, soulmates, and personal dysfunction.
Nick Turner gets the most mileage out of pet adoption hypocrisy. While other owners brag about rescuing immaculate three-month-old puppies that look ready for the Westminster Dog Show, Turner adopts an older dog with a collapsing trachea, deliberately choosing an agency that skips the home inspection because a homeless animal has no business vetting his apartment.
The set was recorded in June 2016 at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans for the fifth season of Comedy Central’s showcase series, airing that September alongside the release of his debut stand-up album, Yelling. Turner had spent the preceding years working through New York clubs and appearing across talking-head panel shows like VH1’s Best Week Ever and truTV’s Almost Genius.
He operates in a high-strung, exasperated register, treating mild personal inconveniences as deliberate affronts. Beyond the shelter bureaucracy, he picks apart the phrase “soulmate” and details the quiet dread of waiting for STD test results.
