Class Act
Comedy Central Records · Album · 2015 · 50 min
Deadpan club jokes and bleak relationship confessions recorded in Greenwich Village.
Sam Morril drops grim thoughts in an easy, laconic drawl, sounding like someone sharing bad news over a quiet drink. When he suggests that good food could cure racism or admits he would rather lose a relative than misplace his smartphone, the punchlines work because he never raises his voice to defend himself.
Comedy Central Records released Class Act in October 2015, dropping the debut audio album the same weekend Morril appeared on the network’s stand-up series The Half Hour. Recorded at the Village Underground in Manhattan, just down the street from the Comedy Cellar where he cut his teeth, the 49-minute set catches him bridging two styles. He was already a regular on late-night panels like Red Eye and building a reputation around New York as a machine of tight setups and tags, but here he began splicing in longer personal stories about breakups and one-night stands.
The record hit number one on the iTunes comedy chart.
