The Half Hour

Sam Morril

Comedy Central · 2015 · 30 min

Twenty minutes of efficient, low-key club jokes in Boston.

The stage presence is almost aggressive in its lack of movement. Morril stands with the microphone pinned close, running through setups that sound like casual conversation right up until the punchline takes a hard, cynical turn. When a joke touches a nerve and the room tightens up, he does not scramble to win people back; he pauses, lets the awkwardness sit, and waits for the room to catch up.

The set leans heavily on that friction. He pitches a broken-family-style restaurant where nobody shares and everyone eats in sullen isolation, and questions why elementary schools waste time teaching children about dinosaurs when practical skills are nonexistent. There are shorter runs on local news coverage and the logistical absurdities of surprise orgies, all trimmed down to minimal setups.

Recorded at the Royale in Boston in June 2015, the set aired that October as part of the fourth season of the network’s half-hour series, arriving alongside his debut stand-up album, Class Act.

At that point in his career, Morril was working the New York club circuit nightly, building his reputation through sheer volume at the Comedy Cellar while making the rounds on late-night talk shows.
