Pun Gent
Spirit Entertainment · 2016 · 60 min
An unrelenting catalog of deadpan puns delivered at breakneck speed.
Stewart Francis steps out in a suit and headset mic looking like an executive presenting quarterly earnings, then rattles off over a hundred puns without cracking a smile. The appeal is mechanical gag construction: setup, misdirection, twist, repeated every twenty seconds. If a groaner drops, another line is already halfway out of his mouth.
Not every joke connects, but none of them stick around long enough to cause real damage.
Filmed at The Lowry in Salford in late 2015 and released in 2016, the hour caught Francis at peak visibility across British television, having spent years as a mainstay on Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo. He had spent the period leading up to the tour threatening to retire from touring to focus on cartooning. That ambition bleeds onto the stage through slides of his own Sharpie doodles, including a sketch of two fish discussing geopolitics under the title ‘Topical Fish.’
Francis punctuates the wordplay with rare outbursts, including a shouted routine about a Vietnam veterans reunion, and visual gags on a backdrop screen that take aim at Jimmy Carr’s tax affairs. Contemporary reviews noted a couple of off-color jokes that felt out of sync with his deadpan gentility, though the Salford audience stayed on board for the entire mathematical barrage.
