Sleep When The Baby Sleeps

Tony Deyo

Comedy Dynamics · 2018 · 50 min

Clean, metered stand-up picking apart the exhaustion of early fatherhood.

Tony Deyo approaches early parenthood with the exasperation of someone who actually tried following other people’s advice. The core argument takes aim at the titular cliché: telling an adult to sleep when a newborn sleeps ignores the reality of twenty-minute nap cycles and the biological inability to collapse into unconsciousness on command. From there, he argues that new fathers undergo a harsher endurance test than Navy SEAL training, if only because military recruits eventually get to leave Hell Week.

Recorded at the Dry Bar Comedy club in Provo, Utah, the 37-minute set arrived after Deyo spent years working late-night spots on Conan and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Working under the venue’s clean guidelines suits his material. A former band director and symphony percussionist, he relies on strict rhythmic timing and crisp pacing rather than shock value to carry each premise.

Outside the nursery, he touches on the social torture of baby showers and the childhood indignity of marching band practice.
