Hannibal Buress turns a public embarrassment into a high-concept victory lap, building an entire hour around his infamous 2017 arrest in Miami. Instead of downplaying the mugshot or the viral footage, he leads with the actual body-camera video of himself telling an officer that he is “stupid as fuck” and uses the stage to systematically dismantle the entire arrest. It is a slow-burn, hyper-focused revenge set that morphs from standard stand-up into a visually warped piece of multimedia performance art.

Filmed at the Olympia Theater in downtown Miami in August 2019, the special was originally scheduled for a SXSW premiere before the 2020 pandemic forced a change of plans. Rather than selling it to Netflix, Buress released the hour for free on YouTube in July 2020, citing a desire for total creative control. Director Kristian Mercado Figueroa matches Buress’s dry, stoner-style cadence with surreal post-production edits (including pitched-down demonic vocals, visual glitches, and sudden bursts of Auto-Tune) while entirely omitting the standard audience reaction shots.

Between the legal deconstruction, Buress riffs on the mundane realities of his post-arrest sobriety, the lack of societal respect given to asthmatics, and an encounter with a cab driver who fabricated a Kanye West lyric to sneak in a slur. The hour ends with a massive, multi-screen breakdown of his arrest that functions as both a sharp critique of policing and a petty, triumphant act of personal score-settling. Critics praised the special for taking structural risks with the medium, even if the aggressive editing occasionally distracted from Buress’s natural deadpan delivery.
